Simon Cowell appears to have finally confirmed that X Factor contestants Eoghan Quigg and Diana Vickers are dating, by describing the pair as "two young kids in love".

There has been intense media speculation that the pair were dating during their time on the TV talent show.

All contestants shared a house in Hampstead, north London, and since Diana (17) and Eoghan (16) were close in age and were both far from home, they struck up a friendship.

At first their relationship seemed purely platonic, but after the pair were photographed on date after date looking increasingly cosy, suspicion that a romance had bloomed between the couple began to mount.

On Diana's final show before being voted out of the competition, the pair behaved like a couple of star-crossed lovers as Eoghan was in floods of tears and dramatically rushed over to embrace Diana in the middle of her performance.

Speaking at a press conference to promote the final, Cowell explained the drama: "They are just two young kids in love.

"When you make live TV things like that happen. That is the fun thing about it. They are young and enjoying themselves. Why not?"
