Girls say no to macho men
Women perceive men with very masculine features as bad long-term partners, new research suggests.
Psychologists from Durham and St Andrews Universities conducted a study whereby 400 people were asked to judge photographs of men that were digitally altered to make them look more or less feminine.
When asked to infer personality traits based on what they saw, the majority of women perceived men with masculine features such as a square jaw, larger nose and smaller eyes to be significantly more dominant, less faithful, less warm and worse parents than their more feminine-looking counterparts with fuller lips, wider eyes and thinner, more curved eyebrows.
Lead author Dr Lynda Boothroyd said: "This research shows a high amount of agreement between women about what they see, personality wise, when asked to 'judge a book by its cover'.
"They may well use that impression of someone to decide whether or not to engage with that person. That decision-making process all depends on what a woman is looking for in a relationship at that time of her life."
