The average Brit spends ?62 a month (?744 a year) on presents for their partner, a new survey has revealed.

According to a poll of over 2,000 adults by MoneyExpert.com, men are more generous than their female counterparts when it comes to spoiling their loved ones.

The average man spends ?71 a month on pressies for their partner, while women give a slightly stingier ?51-worth of treats to their other half.

Some of the most popular gifts were jewellery, electronic goods and weekends away while some of the more unusual indulgences included sausage making equipment, Koi Carp fish and tattoos.

Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert.com, said: "With Valentines Day, Christmas, anniversaries, birthdays and not to mention the month-to-month treats, we are coughing up more than ever before on gifts for partners.

"Nobody wants to put a price on love but it seems that keeping the spark going has never cost more. It could be we are seeing the end of 'free love' in this country at least."
