For some girls, the Independent Woman fa?ade falters when the Adonis you've been on a date with offers to pay the bill.

While we may think that it's morally right to offer to split the bill on a first date, there's something masculine about a man who offers to pay. And apparently it's all scientific.

Anthropologist Helen Fisher told CBS: "Chimpanzees will catch a little rabbit or hand over sugar cane. The bird catches a fish and hands it to the female.

"The exchange of food for sex. It's called courtship feeding. You see it in insects. In fact, it's so common in insects that they call it the nuptial gift."

Examples of gift exchange from boy animals to girl animals prove that it's in a male's nature to be the provider and that's why we swoon when he offers to foot the bill.

A recent survey by an online dating site discovered that more than 70 per cent of guys think it's their responsibility to pay on a date, while the majority of girls did not disagree with them.

Dating coach Charley Wininger told CBS that paying for the date "demonstrates generosity, the ability to pay and it sends a message that says, 'Hey, I'm not here just to explore the possibility of friendship'".

So when a guy offers to pay, he's not just trying to be the Macho Man that he thinks you'd like, but he wants to show you that he's into you.
