The way a guy speaks might be more important than how attractive he is when it comes to getting the ladies, according to new research.

A study found that 38 per cent of first impressions are based on the way that you speak ? whether this is your pitch, tonality or how quickly you chat.

Psychology expert Sarah Evans says that this is handy information for the dating scene.

She thinks that girls find a deep voice attractive in a guy because it alludes to his physical prowess and testosterone levels, making him seem more manly.

"Females definitely find low pitch attractive," she told the Metro.

"Pitch is determined by testosterone. A deep voice would indicate the man had been exposed to a good dose at puberty, which could make him a good potential partner in terms of breeding."

However, although a guy might sound like an Adonis due to his silky tones over the phone, it doesn't mean that his physical appearance will match up to his voice, as a south-west London PA found.

After talking to a phone operator several times who had an attractive voice, she found that he was actually "just a podgy minger" when she met him in the flesh.
