These little white lies are harmless, according to Tanya Gold, who writes for Cosmopolitan magazine.

Girls often lie to make it seem like they have the same likes and dislikes as their object of affection in order to impress him.

Some girls lie to a guy in order to boost his ego.

Tanya's friend tells her boyfriend that he's the most intelligent guy in the world "even though he can't spell and thinks Norway is near Canada", she writes in the magazine.

But Tanya says there's nothing wrong with fibbing to start off a relationship because to not do so would "upset the balance of the relationship universe".

"The solution's simple: don't call it lying. Call it being unselfish."
