With so many unwritten and unspoken rules about dating, it's hard to know what the best thing is to do in particular circumstances.

For example, who pays the bill on a first date?

Times have changed, and it is no longer clear-cut how the rules of dating work.

However, a new study by Halifax suggests that chivalry is not dead, with almost half of guys saying they will pay for dinner on the first date. This is even though half of girls think splitting the bill in half is perfectly acceptable.

Beyonce Knowles says her rule is simple: "If he invited you out, he has got to pay."

On the first date the guy would like to make a good impression, so if he insists on paying, accept graciously.

But that doesn't mean you have to order the most expensive thing on the menu.

At the end of the date, thank him again for dinner, and if you want to see him again this might be the perfect gap to be bold and suggest a second date.
